How to File a Claim

Filing a claim can feel overwhelming — especially after an accident, disaster, or loss. Here's what to do, step by step.

Step 1 — Document Everything

Before doing anything else, document the damage or incident. Take photos and videos of everything, get contact information from any parties involved, and note the date, time, and circumstances as specifically as possible.

Step 2 — Contact Your Carrier

Call your insurance carrier's claims line as soon as possible. Most carriers have 24/7 claims lines. Have your policy number ready. If you're unsure of the number, contact us and we'll help you connect.

Step 3 — File the Claim

Your carrier will walk you through submitting the formal claim, which typically requires the documentation from Step 1 plus a description of what happened. Be honest and thorough.

Step 4 — Work With the Adjuster

An insurance adjuster will be assigned to your claim. They'll review your documentation, may visit the site, and determine coverage. You have the right to ask questions throughout this process.

Step 5 — Receive Your Settlement

Once the adjuster completes their review, you'll receive a settlement offer. Review it carefully. If you believe it's too low, you can dispute it — and we can help you navigate that process.

Tips to Protect Your Claim

  • Never admit fault at the scene of an accident before speaking with your insurer
  • Keep all receipts related to the loss (temporary repairs, hotel stays, etc.)
  • Don't make permanent repairs before the adjuster has assessed the damage
  • Keep a written log of every conversation with your carrier, including dates and names
  • If your claim is denied, ask for the denial in writing and the specific policy language cited
